India Stock Market : Sensex Hits Record High Above 25,000

Indian stocks may see high intraday volatility today, 16 May 2014, as trends and actual results of wins by candidates/parties are announced during the process of counting of votes for the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.

The S&P BSE Sensex, trimmed gains after hitting record high above 25,000 level and the 50-unit CNX Nifty trimmed gains after hitting record high above 7,500. The Sensex was up 1,250.31 points or 5.23%, off close to 220 points from the day's high and up about 885 points from the day's low.

The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was strong. On BSE, 724 shares gained and 152 shares fell. A total of 30 shares were unchanged.

Nestle IndiaBSE -2.30 % Ltd plunged as much as 2.3 per cent in trade on Wednesday, after the FMCG major said that its net profit for the quarter ended March 31 dropped 7.1 per cent from a year ago to Rs 259.2 crore.

Nestle India was trading 1.8 per cent lower at Rs 4761. It hit a low of Rs 4735 and a high of Rs 4800 in trade today.
Net sales rose to Rs 2,313.46 crore from Rs 2,248.08 crore in the same period of the previous year, Nestle India said in a BSE filing.
Index heavyweight Reliance Industries hit 52-week high. Another index heavyweight and cigarette major ITC also rose. Reliance Infrastructure scaled 52-week high.
The stock hit a 52-week high of Rs 1,067 in intraday trade. The stock hit a low of Rs 1,055.10 in intraday trade so far during the day.

It was a soft opening on Dalal Street. The Sensex is up 32.70 points at 22376.74, and the Nifty is down 5.70 points at 6654.15. About 268 shares have advanced, 115 shares declined, and 22 shares are unchanged.

Indian markets are expected to trade in a range on Friday tracking muted trend seen in other Asian markets. 

The S&P BSE Sensex managed to rally over 100 points in trade on Friday, despite mixed trend seen in other Asian markets. The rally was led by gains in RIL, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and HDFC on the BSE Sensex. 

The 50-share index was trading at 6736, up 40 points or 0.60 per cent. It touched a high of 6,737 and a low of 6,709.95 in early trade today. 

Asian shares were subdued and the dollar held modest gains against the yen in early trade on Friday as markets held their breath ahead of the U.S. payrolls report later in the session -which could show the economy shaking off a severe winter.
